ROWERR CASE STUDY / TOO AMBITIOUS
Custom WooCommerce Development: Too Ambitious
Custom WooCommerce development helped Too Ambitious evolve from a WordPress author website into a direct book-selling platform. Rowerr built the site in 2019, added custom cart, checkout, upsells and downsells in 2021, then adapted book purchasing towards Amazon and external retailers in late 2025. Ongoing website development, advertising support and ActiveCampaign automation kept the same platform aligned with the business.
Six Challenges
- Establish a clear author brand.

In this case study
WordPress Website Development: A Publishing Foundation
Business need
Create an author platform for articles, books, media and professional enquiries, rather than a basic blog.
What Rowerr built
We developed the website from scratch with WordPress, Hello Elementor and Elementor, bringing publishing and professional presentation into one manageable environment.
Why it mattered
The same foundation could accommodate new content and later commerce requirements without separating the author's website from her store.
Custom WooCommerce Checkout: Direct Book Sales
Business need
Introduce direct book purchasing while preserving the existing content and brand experience.
What Rowerr built
We added WooCommerce and customised the cart and checkout around the client's selling requirements. The purchasing journey became: book page, cart, checkout and order completion.
Engineering decision
Commerce belonged inside the existing WordPress platform. The custom cart and checkout supported the business workflow instead of forcing it into a default storefront.
Scope of the record
The supplied history confirms customisation, but not individual historical checkout fields or payment layouts. Those details are not presented as verified implementation facts.
WooCommerce Upsells and Downsells: Relevant Purchase Paths
Business need
Offer customers additional or alternative purchasing choices within the selling experience.
What Rowerr built
We implemented upsell and downsell functionality alongside the customised WooCommerce purchasing journey. An upsell offers an additional or higher-value option; a downsell offers a lower-commitment alternative after an offer is declined.
Development lesson
Offers should fit the buying decision and preserve checkout clarity. Placement, payment compatibility and order handling need to be assessed for each business. Exact historical bundles and conversion gains are not claimed.
Your checkout should fit the way you sell.

Business need
Keep the platform usable as content, media, commerce and marketing requirements expanded.
What Rowerr supported
Ongoing development, maintenance and website updates supported the direct-selling platform for approximately four years after the 2021 expansion.
Technical priorities
Performance, plugin compatibility and checkout reliability remain important as a store evolves. For similar stores, our recommended update process is backups, staging validation and complete purchase-path testing.
Evidence boundary
No historical PageSpeed, Core Web Vitals or revenue benchmarks were supplied, so no numerical improvements are attributed to this work.
WooCommerce to Amazon: Changing the Book-Purchase Journey
Business need
Move book transactions towards Amazon and external retail while retaining the established website.
What Rowerr changed
We adapted the journey from website → book page → WooCommerce checkout to website → book page → external retailer → purchase. WooCommerce infrastructure was retained rather than discarded.
Why this was not a rebuild
The website still presented publications, content and professional credentials. Changing the sales destination did not require replacing years of development or abandoning WordPress.
Current scope
The book-purchase journey uses external retail, including Amazon. This does not imply that every other product or checkout on the website has been deactivated. The transition was a commercial decision, not evidence that WooCommerce failed.

Plan Your Platform Update →Explore WooCommerce ServicesGoogle Ads and Meta Ads: Connecting Traffic With Relevant Content
Business need
Serve book buyers, readers and professional contacts without sending every visitor through the same funnel.
What Rowerr supports
Google Ads, Meta Ads and ongoing website updates connect promotion with the author's books, articles, events and professional activity.
Website responsibility
The destination should match the advertisement: book information for buying intent, relevant content for readers, and professional information for speaking or collaboration enquiries.
Results we can describe
The website remained a central brand, content and demand-generation destination. Advertising spend, conversion rates and return on ad spend were not supplied and are not estimated here.
ActiveCampaign Integration: Three Lists and 21 Automated Emails
Business need
Maintain a relationship with visitors who subscribe but are not ready to purchase immediately.
What Rowerr implemented
We connected the website with ActiveCampaign, configured three audience lists and three automated email sequences containing 6, 12 and 3 emails: 21 automated emails in total. General announcements and promotional communication were also configured.
Connected workflow
Website opt-in → subscriber management → automated follow-up and relevant updates. This supported an audience relationship beyond an immediate book purchase.
Scope
The supplied history does not establish an exact launch month for this integration. It is shown as ongoing engagement rather than assigned an invented date.

- Approximately four years of direct commerce supported by ongoing development.
- A late-2025 change to external book purchasing without replacing the website.
- Three audience lists and 21 automated emails across three sequences.
- An ongoing brand, content, advertising and audience platform.
The documented outcome is adaptability, not a claimed increase in revenue or conversion rate. Historical performance and marketing benchmarks were not supplied.

Recommended Next Steps: Measure Each Visitor Journey
These are recommendations for future refinement, not a claim that every measurement or experiment is already implemented.
- Book intent: relevant book page → publication information → external retailer.
- Reader intent: relevant article → newsletter opt-in → ActiveCampaign follow-up.
- Professional intent: credentials and speaking information → enquiry.
- Track retailer clicks separately from confirmed purchases; an outbound click does not prove an Amazon sale.
- Test message-to-page alignment and email sequences before changing the whole platform.
Custom WooCommerce Development FAQs
40 practical questions about checkout, maintenance, external retail and marketing integrations.
01Why did my old checkout-field code stop working after moving to Checkout blocks?
Classic checkout filters and the block architecture are not interchangeable. Rebuild fields using WooCommerce's Additional Checkout Fields/API or supported block extension points rather than forcing old checkout_fields PHP logic into the new checkout.
02Why is my payment gateway missing from Checkout blocks?
Confirm the gateway explicitly supports the block checkout. If a revenue-critical gateway remains classic-only, keep or restore classic checkout temporarily and test migration on staging. The Checkout block requires compatible payment integrations.
03Why does Place Order spin forever?
Inspect browser console/network requests and WooCommerce logs. Common causes are JavaScript failures, AJAX requests that never complete, caching/session problems or gateway requests. Reproduce on staging with non-essential plugins disabled.
04Why does checkout work for me while logged in but fail for customers?
Test as a guest in a private browser. Check session cookies, cached responses and CDN rules: cart and checkout must not reuse another visitor's or an outdated session. Then compare guest and logged-in requests.
05Why did checkout break after updating WordPress or WooCommerce?
Preserve logs and a backup, reproduce the problem on staging, and isolate the changed extensions. Restore a compatible version only with a controlled recovery plan that protects orders received since the backup.
06How do I update WooCommerce without risking live orders?
Back up first, clone/stage the site, apply the exact proposed update set, run end-to-end test orders and only then deploy. Avoid combining many major updates without prior staging validation.
07Why did checkout break after moving hosts?
Check HTTPS and site URLs, supported PHP versions and extensions, cache rules, scheduled tasks, gateway credentials and webhook delivery. Validate the complete checkout journey on the migrated environment.
08A card was charged but the Woo order says Failed. What now?
Verify the charge at the gateway first. Compare gateway log, Woo order notes and webhook delivery before retrying. The system may have accepted payment but failed to synchronise the final order status.
09Why are customers getting duplicate orders after retrying payment?
Investigate the first gateway transaction before inviting another attempt. Check whether the initial payment completed but its confirmation failed. Add idempotent handling where custom integrations create orders or consume webhooks.
10Why are 3-D Secure payments failing?
Check gateway logs, authentication responses and plugin compatibility to identify where authentication fails. Keep 3-D Secure protections enabled; correct the integration rather than bypassing authentication.
11Why is wc-ajax=update_order_review extremely slow?
Profile the server request, shipping/tax calculations, gateway calls and plugins attached to checkout recalculation. Disable integrations on staging to isolate the slow component rather than optimising CSS or images that are unrelated to the server-side AJAX delay.
12Why does WooCommerce feel fast except on cart and checkout?
Dynamic commerce pages cannot be cached like ordinary content and execute more server logic. Profile database queries, shipping, tax, gateways, sessions and checkout plugins specifically; do not judge checkout performance from homepage PageSpeed alone.
13How do I find which plugin broke checkout?
Use staging, preserve a backup, retain WooCommerce plus the required gateway, switch to a baseline theme if necessary, disable non-essential plugins and reactivate them individually until the fault returns. This is WooCommerce's documented conflict-test method.
14Should I simply install another checkout-fix plugin when checkout breaks?
Usually no. Additional code can mask the symptom while increasing the conflict surface. Identify the failing request, log or incompatible extension first; only add software when it solves a diagnosed requirement.
15Why are custom checkout fields not appearing in blocks?
Register them through the supported Additional Checkout Fields mechanism so they are known to the checkout and Store API. WooCommerce explicitly recommends this approach for fields rendered in Checkout blocks.
16Can I still use WooCommerce hooks with Checkout blocks?
Some lifecycle hooks remain, but many classic presentation hooks have different block alternatives or no direct equivalent. Check WooCommerce's hook-alternatives documentation before migrating custom code.
17How should I build a complex custom Checkout-block component?
Use WooCommerce's supported block extension interfaces rather than overriding the entire checkout. The developer documentation exposes APIs for registered checkout blocks, filters, inner blocks and frontend React components.
18Should I remove as many checkout fields as possible?
Remove fields only when the business, payment, tax and fulfilment processes genuinely do not need them. Less friction is useful, but WooCommerce cautions that fields can be structurally important, especially in block checkout.
19How can I convert a WooCommerce product into a “Buy on Amazon” product?
For a catalogue product, use WooCommerce's External/Affiliate product type, set the retailer URL and use clear button text such as Buy on Amazon. For a custom book landing page, link its purchase button to the correct retailer.
20Should I delete my Woo products when moving sales to Amazon?
Usually not if those pages have useful content, links or search visibility. Preserve the product/content layer, change the transactional CTA and redirect only genuinely redundant URLs. This is the architecture recommended for Too Ambitious.
21How do I measure Amazon clicks when WooCommerce no longer records the sale?
Fire a dedicated outbound-retailer event containing book/product and destination. Treat it as an outbound-intent conversion, not as a purchase. Keep it separate from GA4's purchase event, which is intended for completed transactions.
22Can I mix external-retailer books and directly sold products on one WooCommerce site?
Yes. Keep product type and CTA behaviour explicit: external books leave the site, while physical direct-sale products follow cart → checkout. Analytics must distinguish the two journeys. WooCommerce supports external and standard product types.
23How should I preserve a paused WooCommerce store?
Document it, back it up, remove unnecessary extensions and either keep required components maintained or isolate the dormant system. Leaving outdated payment/funnel plugins active indefinitely creates maintenance risk. WooCommerce recommends regular backups and staging for retained installations.
24When should I migrate a store to HPOS?
Audit extension compatibility first, stage the migration, synchronise/verify order data and test reporting, fulfilment and integrations before switching the live authority. HPOS is a storage architecture decision, not a checkbox to enable blindly on a heavily customised legacy store.
25Why are WooCommerce reports missing historical data?
Check whether analytics lookup tables/historical imports are complete and whether a storage migration occurred. Validate against actual orders before assuming the revenue disappeared. WooCommerce Analytics relies on its reporting data structures rather than merely reading every admin screen live.
26Why is my cart-abandonment email system missing visitors?
An anonymous cart cannot receive an email when no address was supplied. Check when identity becomes available and whether your integration records the cart. Use recovery only with appropriate permission and stop messages after purchase.
27How many abandoned-cart emails should I send?
There is no universal number. Test timing and sequence against recovered revenue, unsubscribe rate and complaints. Stop the recovery automation immediately when the order is completed; avoid continuing “you forgot something” messages after a purchase.
28Where should I place an order bump?
Prefer a low-cognitive-load complementary offer that does not introduce payment or validation instability. Measure checkout completion as well as bump take-rate: a profitable bump that reduces core-order conversion may be a net loss.
29What is the safest way to implement a post-purchase upsell?
Secure the original transaction first, then ensure the gateway and upsell mechanism explicitly support any subsequent charge/authorisation flow. Never jeopardise the completed primary order merely to display a second offer.
30How should a downsell differ from an upsell?
Trigger the downsell after the higher-commitment offer is rejected and make it materially easier to accept—lower quantity, simpler bundle or lower commitment. Showing both simultaneously merely adds choices and can increase friction.
31Should ActiveCampaign customers be split into many lists?
Use lists for distinct subscription permissions or communication programmes, and tags, fields and segments for interests and behaviour. Three lists were used in this project; the appropriate structure depends on the purpose of each audience.
32What should ActiveCampaign tags represent?
Use consistent behavioural or interest conventions, such as Interest - Book, Action - Amazon Click or Source - Google Ads. ActiveCampaign recommends structured naming and regular cleanup because uncontrolled tagging becomes difficult to manage.
33Can ActiveCampaign automate follow-up based on WooCommerce behaviour?
Yes. Its WooCommerce integration can use store data in automations, goals and segments. Document exactly which events enter or exit each automation so buyers do not remain in prospect sequences.
34Can I trigger marketing after somebody browses but does not buy?
Where supported by your ActiveCampaign plan and integration, browse-abandonment automation can follow known contacts who view products without buying. Check tracking and consent requirements, and distinguish casual views from purchase intent.
35Why does GA4 show purchases but no begin_checkout, or vice versa?
Validate events in the browser/tag debugger and confirm tag sequencing, consent state and event parameters. Do not assume a broken funnel simply because one event failed to reach GA4. Google defines the ecommerce event sequence explicitly.
36Which WooCommerce events should I track?
At minimum for direct commerce: view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase; add business-specific events for upsell acceptance, checkout error and external-retailer clicks. GA4 documents the core ecommerce events.
37My Google Ads clicks arrive but leads are weak. Should I redesign the whole site?
First test message-to-landing-page alignment. Send each intent to the most relevant page, verify tracking and run a controlled experiment rather than rebuilding everything simultaneously. Google Ads provides Experiments and landing-page testing for this purpose.
38How should I test Meta creative for an author/ecommerce brand?
Compare one variable at a time: book cover versus event/person imagery, benefit-led versus authority-led copy, or book-sale versus newsletter objective. Meta's A/B framework supports controlled tests across creative, copy, audience and placement.
39Why does an ecommerce update need synthetic/end-to-end testing, not just checking the homepage?
A homepage can load correctly while add-to-cart, payment, gateway callbacks or order confirmation fail. Test the complete purchase path after deployments, including guest checkout and the relevant payment methods.
40What should I log when WooCommerce talks to another system?
Record timestamp, order/entity ID, outbound event, response status and retry/failure details without exposing sensitive payment data. WooCommerce webhooks provide delivery/logging mechanisms, while its REST API is intended for controlled connections with external systems.
