WooCommerce Case Study: The Project Overview

MS.CATTEA is a specialty tea business in Sydney, selling premium teas, matcha, teaware, and gifts through its WooCommerce store.

Our relationship began in 2019 when the client needed an online store. In 2023, they returned because some products were not appearing in Google and they wanted better local search visibility. By 2025, their growing collection of product images and content was slowing the website down.

Each time, we focused on solving the actual problem rather than rebuilding a website that was already working.

Three Challenges as the Store Grew

  • 2019: Launch a branded online tea store with practical customer management and reporting.
  • 2023: Investigate missing product pages in Google, improve product content and strengthen local visibility.
  • 2025: Reduce image and frontend loading overhead without replacing the functioning store.

Our Approach: Diagnose, Improve, Preserve

Each return engagement began with the issue the client needed to solve. We discussed design and reporting requirements for the launch, investigated search visibility with Search Console, and audited performance before recommending the later speed improvements.

The connected solution: build a useful commerce foundation, improve discovery, then optimise delivery while preserving the store's existing design and shopping functionality.

2019

WooCommerce Store Development & Custom Reporting

The problem: A local tea business needed an online store matching its brand and reporting requirements.

The original development project was straightforward. MS.CATTEA had specific design preferences and needed a functional ecommerce website where customers could browse teas, explore categories, and purchase products.

The additional requirement was better business reporting. The client wanted to understand sales and customer activity through reports tailored to their needs.

How we solved it

We built the store using WordPress, WooCommerce, and Elementor, following the client's design requirements.

The setup included product categories, product pages, cart, checkout, and customer account functionality.

For reporting, we connected a CRM and configured a reporting plugin. We discussed what information the client wanted to analyze and customized the available reports around those requirements.

The result

MS.CATTEA received a working WooCommerce store that matched its design preferences, with customer management and reporting tools ready for daily operations.

What store owners can learn: A successful ecommerce launch does not need unnecessary complexity. Build around your customers' shopping experience and decide which business metrics you need to monitor from the beginning.

Your store should fit the way your business works.

From product pages to reporting and integrations, start with the workflow you need to improve.

WooCommerce Product Indexing & Local SEO

The problem: Some products were not appearing in Google, AI-generated content needed improvement, and the business wanted more local customers.

As the store expanded, the client began publishing more product descriptions and blog content, including AI-generated material.

Some product pages experienced indexing problems, while other content needed better keyword targeting and more useful information for customers.

The client also wanted to attract people searching for tea shops and specialty tea products in Sydney.

We worked on these SEO challenges over approximately two to three months.

Challenge 1: Why weren't some WooCommerce products appearing in Google?

A product cannot rank in Google Search unless it is indexed.

We installed and configured Rank Math SEO and worked on the store's technical SEO, including XML sitemaps, indexing settings, titles, meta descriptions, and product URLs.

Using Google Search Console, we investigated indexing issues, addressed the relevant causes, and submitted important URLs and sitemaps for discovery and indexing.

The solution: Identify why important product URLs are excluded before requesting indexing. Repeated submissions alone cannot fix technical indexing problems.

Challenge 2: Why wasn't AI-generated product content performing well?

The client had started using AI to create product descriptions and blog articles.

AI-generated content is not automatically bad for SEO. The problem arises when descriptions are generic, repetitive, inaccurate, or fail to answer what customers actually want to know.

We reviewed and improved content around relevant keywords and search intent, making product descriptions more useful and better structured.

For a specialty tea store, helpful information may include tea origin, variety, flavor, grade, preparation instructions, and product-specific details.

The solution: Use AI to assist content creation, but review and improve the material with accurate product information and genuine customer value.

Challenge 3: How could a local tea shop improve its Google visibility?

We researched keywords for specific products, tea categories, and searches with local buying intent.

Examples of relevant search themes included:

  • Specialty tea and matcha products
  • Tea shops in Sydney
  • Tea shops in Potts Point
  • Tea tasting experiences in Sydney

We optimized relevant pages and created and configured the client's Google Business Profile.

We also supported local outreach by connecting with relevant contacts, introducing the tea products, and creating opportunities for product discovery and independent recommendations. Genuine customer reviews formed another part of the local visibility effort.

The solution: Combine technical SEO and product optimization with a complete Google Business Profile, locally relevant content, consistent business details, and authentic reviews.

The result

The indexing work improved the visibility of affected product pages, while local SEO efforts helped MS.CATTEA improve its search rankings in the local market.

What store owners can learn: If your WooCommerce products are not indexing, investigate technical SEO first. If you operate a physical business, product SEO alone is not enough—your local search presence also needs attention.

For a practical diagnosis checklist, read our WooCommerce speed optimization guide. The performance phase below explains what was addressed on this store.

WooCommerce Speed Optimization Without a Rebuild

The problem: The expanding product catalog and large image library were affecting website speed.

Over time, MS.CATTEA uploaded more product photography, gallery images, and website content.

The website had become slower, and the client contacted us to improve its performance.

Rather than proposing a new theme or rebuilding the store, we began with a website performance audit.

Challenge 1: Large product images increased page weight

We reviewed the store's images and identified opportunities to reduce file sizes.

We converted product images into WebP, an image format that can deliver smaller files while maintaining suitable visual quality.

Optimizing images reduces the amount of data customers need to download when browsing product pages.

Challenge 2: CSS and JavaScript affected frontend loading

The website used Elementor alongside WooCommerce and other plugins.

We optimized CSS and JavaScript delivery to reduce unnecessary frontend overhead while preserving the existing layouts and shopping functionality.

We also installed an Elementor performance optimization plugin to further improve frontend efficiency.

Challenge 3: The website needed better caching

We installed and configured WP Rocket to improve page caching and optimize frontend resource delivery.

Caching reduces repeated server processing for eligible pages.

Special care is necessary for WooCommerce cart, checkout, and account pages because these contain customer-specific information and must not be served from an inappropriate shared cache.

Challenge 4: Static assets needed more efficient delivery

We configured Cloudflare CDN to improve the delivery of images, stylesheets, and JavaScript files.

A content delivery network can serve eligible website assets from servers closer to visitors, reducing unnecessary loading delays.

The result

We resolved the performance issues reported by the client and improved website loading without replacing the WooCommerce setup or redesigning the store.

Why didn't we recommend a headless WooCommerce rebuild?

Because the identified problems could be addressed through image optimization, caching, and frontend improvements.

A React or Next.js storefront would have added development and maintenance complexity without a clear need for the business.

What store owners can learn: If your WooCommerce website becomes slow after adding more products, start by auditing image sizes, unnecessary scripts, caching, and CDN configuration. A redesign or headless rebuild should not be your first solution.

Compare the decision with our headless WooCommerce guide: a separate frontend should solve a demonstrated requirement, not replace routine optimisation.

Results: Improving the Same WooCommerce Store

YearBusiness challengeSolution and outcome
2019Needed an online store and better reportingBuilt a WooCommerce store and configured CRM and reporting tools
2023Product indexing problems and limited local search visibilityImproved technical SEO, content, indexing, and local rankings
2025Slow loading caused by growing product images and frontend resourcesOptimized images, CSS, JavaScript, caching, and CDN delivery without a rebuild

The most important result was continuity.

Instead of repeatedly replacing the website, MS.CATTEA could keep using its existing WooCommerce store while addressing new business challenges as they appeared.

Evidence boundary: These qualitative outcomes follow Rowerr's supplied project account. No historical ranking positions, traffic increases, conversion uplift or before-and-after speed scores were supplied, so none are claimed here.

WooCommerce SEO & Performance: Frequently Asked Questions

01Why are my WooCommerce products not indexing on Google?

Common causes include incorrect indexing settings, canonical URL problems, duplicate or low-value content, and crawling or discovery issues. Use Google Search Console to identify why individual URLs are excluded, fix the cause, and then request indexing where appropriate.

02Does Google penalize AI-generated WooCommerce product descriptions?

Google does not automatically penalize content simply because AI created it. The focus should be on accuracy, originality, usefulness, and search intent. Generic AI descriptions that offer little value may struggle to perform.

03How can a WooCommerce store improve local SEO?

Optimize your Google Business Profile, maintain accurate business details, target locally relevant keywords, improve your website content, and encourage genuine customer reviews. Local SEO works best when your website and business profile support each other.

04Why does WooCommerce become slow after adding more products?

An expanding catalog can increase image weight, database activity, and frontend resource usage. Audit the website to identify the actual bottleneck before optimizing images, scripts, caching, or hosting.

05Do I need to rebuild my WooCommerce website to improve speed?

Not necessarily. Image optimization, WebP conversion, caching through tools such as WP Rocket, frontend optimization, and Cloudflare CDN can often improve an existing website without changing its design.

The Final Takeaway

MS.CATTEA's journey from 2019 to 2025 demonstrates a practical approach to WooCommerce development and maintenance.

The store needed a solid foundation in 2019, better search visibility in 2023, and improved performance in 2025.

Each challenge required a different solution, but none required rebuilding the entire website.

At Rowerr, our approach is simple: find the actual problem, choose the right solution, and preserve what already works.
